Signs Your Sewer Line May Need Repair

Sewer problems rarely announce themselves clearly. More often, they show up as a pattern of smaller symptoms that, taken together, point to a damaged main line. San Francisco’s older housing stock makes these signs worth taking seriously rather than waiting them out.

Watch for these warning indicators:

• Recurring drain backups: Clogs in multiple fixtures at once suggest a main sewer line issue, not an isolated blockage.
• Persistent foul odors: Sewer gases escaping through a crack or break in the line produce smells that won’t go away with cleaning.

Trenchless Repair Methods We Use

Before any repair begins, we run a sewer video camera inspection through the line. This shows us the exact location and nature of the damage so we can recommend the right approach. Two primary methods cover the range of conditions we encounter.

Pipe Lining

Pipe lining, formally called cured-in-place pipe lining, involves inserting a flexible liner saturated with epoxy resin into the damaged pipe. The liner is inflated and cured in place, forming a smooth, seamless new pipe inside the old one. This method works well for pipes that are cracked, corroded, or suffering from root intrusion but still hold their basic shape, restoring the sewer lateral without removing the original pipe.

Pipe Bursting

When a pipe is too far gone for lining, pipe bursting replaces it entirely without open excavation. A bursting head is pulled through the damaged line, fracturing the old pipe outward while simultaneously pulling a new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe into position. HDPE resists corrosion, cracking, and future root intrusion, making it a durable, long-term solution for severely damaged or collapsed lines.

Both methods require only small access points at each end of the damaged section rather than a trench running the full length of the line.
